The New Deal was a bundle of cautious half-measures. By 1940, unemployment still stood at 14.5%. The New Deal became a great success only by gearing up for World War II. That is hardly a model to emulate. To get out of today's mess we need huge investments up front in green technology, infrastructure, high-speed trains, education, and health care.
